SDG-Focused CLIL Courses
CLIL, or Content and Language Integrated Learning, is an educational approach where core subjects— including science, history, mathematics, and art— are taught in a foreign language, in this case English. The CLIL learning method combines language learning with subject matter, helping students simultaneously acquire both content knowledge and language skills.
CLIL coursework provides opportunities for immersive language acquisition and cognitive development, while directly aligning with Taiwan’s educational goals cultural global competencies. CLIL not only helps with language acquisition but also enriches the learning experience by integrating content and communication.
Research suggests that students in CLIL programs often perform better academically across subjects, as the cognitive load is shared between language and content learning, leading to deeper understanding. CLIL promotes connections between different subjects, encouraging students to see the relationships between various fields of knowledge.
At LEAP, our CLIL coursework is scaffolded around the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This offers a compelling approach to education that fosters relevance, engagement, and global awareness. By addressing pressing global issues, these classes make learning meaningful and encourage students to connect with real-world challenges. The interdisciplinary nature of the SDGs promotes critical thinking and problem-solving skills, while contextualized language learning enhances vocabulary acquisition and fluency. LEAP aims to foster a sense of global citizenship, understanding social justice and environmental sustainability. This approach also empowers students to take action in their communities, instilling a sense of agency. By embedding the SDGs into CLIL classes, LEAP’s educators create dynamic, impactful learning environments that prepare students for both academic success and their roles as responsible global citizens.
